A Sparking Sense of Purpose
Long ago, there lived a mighty King, who ruled a great and prosperous land. The King was a wizard, and his knowledge of magic was vast. In his youth, the monarch married a beautiful Queen, and he counted himself the happiest man in the world. His wife soon bore him a son, and the Queen took the newborn Prince to her fairy godmother. The fairy bestowed on the baby Prince both charm and wit, the ability to delight everyone and to learn anything with ease.
Tragedy struck a few years later. The Queen took ill and died. With her last breath, she advised her son to consult his fairy godmother on any weighty matter. The Prince promised, and the Queen died in peace. The Prince was heartbroken, but he was young and resilient, and time healed his grief. Not so with his father. The Queen's death threw the King into despair, and nothing could draw him from his wild sorrow.
Finally, the King decided to travel the world, hoping the distraction would relieve his anguish. He used his magic to visit fabulous realms, and one day he took the form of an eagle and flew to a palace by a beautiful lake. The King saw a Queen and her grown daughter sitting together, and the Princess was more beautiful than the moon and stars together. The King fell in love with her, and his grief vanished for the first time. Moved by his passion, the King swooped down on eagle wings, snatched the Princess in his talons, and flew off.
The Princess screamed with terror and struggled mightily, so the King landed in a beautiful meadow and resumed his human shape. "Do not fear me," he told the Princess. "I am a King and have fallen in love with you. I want to marry you and give you all the happiness in the world."
"If you love me," the Princess exclaimed, "return me to my home."

QUESTION: How do you suppose this story turned out, in terms of the King, his son, and the princess?

This, in fact, unfolds to be a classic
case of the Oedipus struggle.
It is an ever ongoing replay of the torrid misfortunes
of the clash between accepted standards and the new way!
It is very often misunderstood and mischaracterized
as a clash between youthful exuberance old-age senility
as a disrepect for wisdom
as a display of hubris.
We face this particular conundrum at many stages of life as well as in many areas of life's daily operations. Might it be that something quite different is at play?

ACTION: Reflect. Put yourself in the shoes of each of the characters as you consider how they'd behave in your re-imagined dramatization of the story. What would each person need to do (from your current perspective) to produce an eloquent outcome? How would you facilitate that happening in your real life experience?
